Different Types Of Computers And Their Own Amazing Functions

Almost everyone uses computers every single day for a wide range of applications. Nevertheless, different computer types are classified according to their own size, power and performance.

We have 4 types of computers which vary according to their performance, power and size. Whatever tasks you want to complete, computers can be a great device for you. But there are so many people purchasing computers without knowing clearly about their complicated functions. In this article, we will show you the difference between super, mini, mainframe and microcomputers so you can choose an appropriate one for you.

Supercomputers

Supercomputers were built by Seymour Cray with an aim to offer the quickest processing speed of any computer. Now, they are considered to be the most powerful machines in terms of speed processing capability as well as performance and the price for a supercomputer is also very expensive. Hence, they are often used in high-end areas such as in scientific research centres.

Supercomputers are optimized for specialized applications that require lots of number crunching or mathematical calculations like fluid dynamic calculations, graphics, electronic design, nuclear energy, analysis of geological data and scientific simulations.

Mainframe Computers

Mainframe computers are large and expensive, but not as much as the previous ones. They can support a multitude of users simultaneously. While supercomputers deliver all the power into executing programs super quickly, mainframe use their own power to concurrently execute programs.

Thanks to their size, capability to seek application in organizations handling with bulk of data as well as high heat dissipation capacity, mainframe computers usually appear in big air-conditioned facilities. In some situations, these computers are even more powerful than the super ones as they can finish more simultaneous programs. However, the speed for executing a single program of them are slower than supercomputers.

Mid-Range or Minicomputers

These midsize computers, just like their names, are smaller than supercomputers and mainframe computers. The term “minicomputer” has appeared since the 1960s to describe a kind of computer which was able to utilize transistor technology. Due to their small size and power, they are often used for performing easier tasks and processing lesser data. Normally, a minicomputer can only support between 4 and 200 users simultaneously. That is also the reason why their main responsibility is to handle particular tasks requiring not only computational capabilities but also a high degree of accuracy. However, minicomputers’ usage has been released since the existence of microprocessors.

Personal Computers or Microcomputers

Personal computers are small and inexpensive machines that are designed to fit every individual user. The price for a microcomputer ranges from some hundred pounds to more than 5 thousand pounds.

Some examples of microcomputers can be listed as desktop computers, calculators, laptops, mobile phones, navigation and car sound systems, netbooks and gaming consoles. Their convenience in size , use and easy accessibility makes them to be the most outstanding devices among other different types of computers nowadays. The popular manufacturers of microcomputers include Samsung, Apple, HP, Dell and Toshiba.

At work, people use them for database management applications, processing, desktop publishing, accounting and running spreadsheets. At home, people use them for entertainment including surfing the Internet or playing games.

  • Studying

Almost every student at colleges or universities is encouraged to own a personal computer to support their learning such as accessing online libraries, doing research or completing an assignment. There are a wide range of different collections of materials available on the Internet. So, equipping yourself with laptops can make your study easier and funnier.

  • Entertainment

Some personal entertainment you can find on your smart devices are video games or music. Depending on different demands and purposes, you can totally download and set up anything you want on your computers and enjoy them in your freetime.

  • Application processing

Application processing that are mostly used by people contain Adobe applications, Microsoft Word, Excel and browsing applications. Basically, they are light and do not require many resources to run.
